El-Rufai Urges South-East To Take Voter Registration Seriously

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called on the people of the South-East to prioritise voter registration, warning that the region is lagging behind in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

El-Rufai made the appeal on Saturday while speaking at an event in Imo State, where he particularly urged women to take the lead in mobilising their children and communities to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He emphasised that voter registration is a civic responsibility rather than a political choice, stressing that the democratic system thrives on citizens’ participation in the electoral process.

“Governance in our country today is democratic. We elect our leaders – we don’t select them, we don’t appoint them. Voting is important, and registering to vote is a civic duty every Nigerian must take seriously,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor expressed concern over the South-East’s poor turnout in the exercise, describing it as a major setback for the region’s political voice.

“Looking at the numbers from the voter registry in the last two weeks, the South-East, including Imo State, is behind the rest of Nigeria. I want to appeal to our mothers, sisters, and daughters: please take this up.

“Get our children who are 16 years and above, and who will be eligible by 2027, to register now. It is very important,” he added.
