Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has dismissed insinuations that he is politically mentored by his predecessor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, insisting that his true political inspirations remain President Bola Tinubu and the late legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.
Speaking on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, Sani said suggestions that El-Rufai serves as his guiding political light were unfounded, stressing that he is more concerned with governance than personality debates.
“I don’t think it is necessary to respond to that comment,” the governor said. “What I can say is that there are a lot of people in my life. Even President Bola Tinubu — I met him in 1994 at the house of Beko Ransome-Kuti.
Gani is a leader and father to me because, during the struggle, I lived and stayed in his house. My focus is Kaduna. I don’t talk about individuals; I don’t get distracted, my eyes are on the ball.”
Governor Sani also refuted reports that his administration has been paying ransom to bandits operating in some parts of Kaduna, particularly in Birnin Gwari. He described the allegations as a political smear campaign aimed at discrediting his government.
“Some politicians are playing with insecurity. People should ignore them. We are not paying ransom to any bandit.
“The community leaders came up with the non-kinetic idea, and I listened to them. We have not paid one person a dime. Anyone suggesting otherwise is only trying to mislead the public,” he declared.
The governor explained that his government has adopted a mix of military action and community-based strategies to restore peace in volatile areas, noting that collaboration with local leaders has started yielding results.
On the recent violent disruption of an opposition transition committee meeting in the state, Sani distanced his administration from the incident, stressing his commitment to rule of law and democratic freedom.
“As someone who fought for the rule of law and was detained five times, I will never be part of anything to stop anyone’s political activities,” he said.
He added that the police are investigating the matter and urged all parties to allow law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties without interference.
Highlighting his administration’s political strides, the governor pointed to the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) sweeping victory in the last elections as evidence of his inclusive governance model.
“In Kaduna, APC won 70 per cent of the elections. We had never won Chikun and Kajuru before. Only two years ago, Labour Party won there, but this time, we carried everyone along. We don’t run government on the basis of religion or ethnicity,” he said.
Governor Sani maintained that his government’s priority remains delivering good governance and fostering unity across Kaduna State, not responding to what he called distractions from political opponents.
