…Says move Is Wasteful, Diabolical,Politically Motivated
The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a swipe at Governor Dapo Abiodun over his appointment of 236 ward youth leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as political assistants, describing the move as “wasteful, diabolical and a ploy for selfish political survival.”
The opposition party, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Otunba Kayode Adebayo, accused the governor of prioritising personal ambition ahead of responsible governance at a time the state is grappling with economic hardship, poor infrastructure and underfunded health facilities.
According to the PDP, the appointments are nothing more than a strategy by Abiodun to consolidate his 2027 political ambition and build “a political militia” similar to what it claimed was deployed during the 2023 gubernatorial election and the recent Remo Federal Constituency bye-election.
“This is not governance. It is a brazen misuse of public funds for a dead and selfish political survival,” the party declared.
The PDP alleged that beyond political patronage, the youth leaders were being coerced into taking oaths of allegiance to the governor and his yet-to-be-anointed successor — an allegation it described as “disturbing and dangerous for democracy.”
The statement further read: “Even more disturbing are widespread reports that these youth leaders are to be coerced into diabolical oaths of allegiance. Despite the government’s feeble denial, these reports have been in circulation for days.”
The party urged the appointed youth leaders to resist what it called “Greek gifts” designed to mortgage the state’s future, warning that their potentials should not be hijacked to fuel what it termed Abiodun’s “despicable desperation.”
It also faulted the timing of the appointments, questioning why the governor waited “six uneventful years” before recognising the youth wing of his party.
While clarifying that it was not against genuine political appointments, the PDP enjoined youth groups and the general public to join forces with it in building “a government of service, not a government of waste and fear.”
Governor Abiodun is yet to respond to the allegations as of press time.
