Says Governor, Senator Not Friends Since 2003 PDP Primaries

The Media Aide to the Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Mr. Steve Oliyide, has declared that Governor Dapo Abiodun’s incumbency power will not deter his principal from seeking re-election in 2027.

Oliyide, who spoke during a radio programme anchored by veteran broadcaster, Dele Ayodo, insisted that only the people of Ogun East Senatorial District would determine Daniel’s political future, not the influence of Governor Abiodun.

He said:“neither the power of incumbency nor the position of Governor Abiodun can stop Senator Daniel. The people he has diligently served will speak for him in 2027.”l

According to Oliyide, within less than two years in the Senate, Daniel has sponsored 19 bills and three motions, while also embarking on projects rooted in the needs assessment of his constituents.

Speaking on the widely speculated cordiality between the governor and the former Ogun State governor, Oliyide dismissed the narrative, insisting that the two leaders are not friends.

He traced the strained relationship to the 2003 PDP governorship primaries where Daniel defeated Abiodun and 15 other aspirants.

“There is a wrong public perception that Governor Abiodun and Senator Daniel are friends. That is not true. The root of their strained relationship dates back to 2003,” Oliyide said.

He recalled that Abiodun, then a member of the PDP, came second in the race but allegedly never recovered from the defeat.

Oliyide added:“The bitterness arose from sentiments that OGD, an Ijebu man, should not take what was considered a Remo slot. But OGD shocked everyone by winning outrightly, crossing the 50% mark and avoiding a re-run which could have favoured Abiodun.”

He alleged that Governor Abiodun still harbours that grudge and now sees his position as an opportunity to retaliate politically.

On the speculations about Senator Daniel’s suspension from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oliyide dismissed the claims as false.

He said the reports were triggered by a social media post from a self-styled party media director, stressing that Daniel remains a strong member of the ruling party.

“Under no circumstance will anybody push him out of APC. The Senator is fully in the party, working for the people, and focused on his legislative duties,” Oliyide affirmed.
