…. Teenagers Filmed Smoking, Sharing Alcohol Bottles
… Parents, Stakeholders Raise Alarm Over Rising Moral Decay
The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into a viral video showing some secondary school students smoking and consuming alcohol inside what appeared to be a hostel.
The disturbing footage, which surfaced on social media earlier this week, captured a group of teenagers passing what looked like a cigarette among themselves while bottles suspected to contain alcohol were spotted around them.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, in a statement on Wednesday, condemned the act, describing it as a gross violation of the behavioural standards expected within the state’s educational system.
“The state government views this incident with the utmost seriousness, as it goes against the core values and moral discipline we seek to instill in our students,” Alli-Balogun said.
He disclosed that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the Office of Education Quality Assurance, had dispatched a monitoring team to verify the authenticity of the video, identify the students involved, and determine the level of negligence on the part of the school authorities.
According to him, preliminary engagement with the school’s management has commenced, and any institution found culpable would face strict sanctions in line with state education policies.
“We are committed to ensuring that all learning environments in Lagos remain safe, disciplined, and conducive to academic and moral growth. The safety, well-being, and moral values of every learner remain paramount to this administration,” the commissioner stressed.
The video has since triggered widespread outrage among parents and education stakeholders, who fear the increasing exposure of minors to drugs and alcohol within supposed safe environments.
Stakeholders have called for stronger parental involvement, regular hostel inspections, and stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures across schools in the state.
PLATFORM TIMES observed that the female students were captured while in school uniform passing the cigarettes to one another.
