The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Kano State chapter, has dissociated itself from comments credited to its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Muhd Tukur Baba, suggesting that the group opposed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s possible emergence as the sole presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Wednesday, the state chairman of the forum, Gwani Farouk Umar, said the remarks did not reflect the collective position of the ACF, stressing that the body does not endorse or oppose political candidates.

“What the spokesman said was not with our consent, and we are not happy about it. We are not politicians and we do not take sides with candidates,” Umar stated.

He explained that the Kano ACF had already disavowed the comments and urged the forum’s national leadership to thoroughly review any political statement before making it public.

According to him, this was not the first time an ACF representative had made unauthorized endorsements, forcing the forum to issue disclaimers.

Umar further advised the leadership to caution Prof. Baba to avoid a recurrence that could drag the forum into partisan controversies.

The chairman recalled that in the build-up to the 2023 elections, the ACF held meetings with political parties and secured commitments on key issues of concern to the North, but maintained neutrality in endorsing candidates.

In a separate remark, Umar commended Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for presenting a bill to the state assembly seeking full autonomy for local governments.

He urged lawmakers to speedily pass the bill and called on anti-corruption agencies to ensure that public funds are not mismanaged.
