Convener of a socio-political group, the United Premier Movement (UPM), Olalekan Shoyinka (popularly known as Ayinla Egba), has accused the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun of failing to deliver quality road projects while allegedly posturing as an authority on technical standards.
Ayinla Egba in a strongly worded rejoinder he personally signed, described as “hypocrisy” the governor’s recent directive demanding strict adherence to technical specifications on a federal road project in Sagamu.
“It is ironic that an administration notorious for substandard roads now seeks to lecture others about technical standards,” Shoyinka said.
According to him, most of the roads commissioned by the Abiodun administration collapse within two years of completion. It cited the Papa–Ilaro Road, the Ilaro–Owode axis, and the Oke-Lantoro culvert, where communities had reportedly demanded a bridge but were told the governor only paid for a road.
“The so-called palliative works under the NNPC Flyover at NOUN, Ibara Flyover, Akin-Olugbade, and Lafenwa peeled off in less than six months. Ogun residents have been stripped of the dignity of safe, durable infrastructure,” the statement read.
The group further criticised the handling of the 70-kilometre Abeokuta–Ifo–Ota–Lagos Expressway, which was flagged off over a year ago with an 18-month completion target.
According to UPM, portions of the road already worked on are “breaking apart even while construction is ongoing.”
The UPM accused the governor of failing to personally inspect or supervise projects, unlike his predecessors.
“Without proper supervision, what is left is deceit and substandard work. Governor Abiodun rules from a distance while contractors shortchange the people,” Shoyinka alleged.
The group also credited the ongoing road interventions in Yewa land to the efforts of Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi), representing Ogun West, and not the state government.
Blaming civil society and opposition parties for failing to hold the government accountable, UPM noted that the “silence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other stakeholders” has emboldened the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to “promote mediocrity under the guise of standards.”
The group maintained that the last time the state experienced durable roads was during the administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, insisting that residents now eagerly await May 2027 for a change in leadership.
“If 2027 elections are based on performance in infrastructure delivery, APC should not even come second. Ogun people deserve better,” Shoyinka declared.
He called on residents to reject “money politics” and hold the government accountable for what it described as failed promises, abandoned projects, and substandard
