Edo-based activist, Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, has been detained by the police after a dramatic confrontation with the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The incident, which has since trended on social media, took a violent turn on Friday when the activist accused Abure of “frustrating the lives of Nigerians” as he prepared to board a Max Air flight to Benin.
In a viral video, Mama Pee could be heard confronting the LP chair: “Are you not Julius Abure? You have destroyed the Labour Party, and you’re entering an aeroplane? May God punish all of you.”
Witnesses said Abure appeared unsettled by the confrontation but tried to defuse the situation before leaving Abuja.
However, upon arrival at the Benin Airport, matters escalated when suspected loyalists of the LP chairman allegedly attacked the activist.
Another video from the scene showed Mama Pee shouting as men attempted to rough-handle her before airport security officials intervened. “They want to beat me after I told Julius Abure he is frustrating Nigerians. He brought thugs to harass me. Look at them,” she cried out.
The activist later alleged that Abure ordered the assault. “He called his thugs to wait for me at the Benin Airport. They harassed me because I told him the truth,” she said.
The confrontation sparked outrage, with another activist, Peter Akah, popularly called Peter for Nigeria, releasing a video calling for her immediate release.
He appealed to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebolo, and the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, to intervene, insisting Mama Pee was a victim of political intimidation.
But the Labour Party has pushed back, insisting Abure was the target of an “unprovoked” attack. Its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the activist accosted the chairman both in Abuja and Benin, while boasting of her police connections.
“She vowed she would not stop attacking Abure or any member of the Labour Party executive because, according to her, ‘you have killed Labour Party and you are the reason Obi is no longer in the Labour Party,’” the statement read.
The LP called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter, alleging that Oruche was being sponsored to harass its leadership.
