The Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has approved a N70 billion mini-grid project to provide renewable and cost-effective electricity for 18 tertiary institutions across the country.
A member of the TETFund Board of Trustees, Engr. Nurudeen Adeyemi, disclosed this on Monday at a town hall meeting in Ilorin, Kwara State, with stakeholders from beneficiary institutions in the North-Central zone.
Adeyemi said the intervention, captured under the 2025 cycle, was designed to tackle one of the most persistent challenges facing Nigerian tertiary institutions — unstable and expensive electricity supply.
“This bold step will guarantee a stable, cost-effective, and renewable power source to our campuses. It will reduce operational costs and strengthen teaching, research, and learning in our institutions,” he stated.
According to him, institutions benefiting from the special high-impact projects in the North-Central include the University of Ilorin, University of Jos, Benue State University, Federal Polytechnic Ny’ak Shendam in Plateau, College of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Nasarawa, and Federal Polytechnic Bida in Niger.
Others are the Federal College of Education Odugbo in Benue, Kwara State College of Education, and Federal College of Education Okene in Kogi.
Adeyemi stressed that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reflects TETFund’s ongoing reforms to transform Nigeria’s tertiary education to meet global standards.
“Since the inauguration of the new board, we have prioritised staff development by sponsoring thousands of lecturers for postgraduate studies at home and abroad, while also supporting conferences and teaching practice programmes,” he said.
On infrastructure, Adeyemi listed lecture theatres, ICT centres, libraries, laboratories, and hostels as part of TETFund’s ongoing interventions, adding that the mini-grid project would further consolidate gains recorded in the sector.
He noted that the town hall engagement was not just a symbolic event but “a partnership for accountability, transparency, and collective progress between communities and institutions.”
“Sustainable solutions can only be built through dialogue, trust, and collective action,” he added.
