The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that its application portal for the 2024/2025 academic session will close on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, as it transitions to a fresh cycle of operations for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The closure marks the end of the second full cycle of the interest-free student loan scheme, which has continued to ease financial burdens for Nigerian undergraduates since its inception.
In a statement signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND disclosed that the new application window would open in the second week of October 2025 and run until January 2026.
The agency, however, warned that all unverified applications for the outgoing 2024/2025 session would be automatically cancelled after October 8, 2025.
Students whose records remain unverified were advised to immediately engage their institutions to complete the process or risk reapplying afresh in the new cycle.
“Announcing the closure of the current application portal is a necessary step to prepare for the next cycle,” NELFUND Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, was quoted as saying.
“NELFUND remains committed to removing financial barriers for students and to working with institutions to ensure that no eligible student is left behind. These timelines provide clarity for students, parents, and institutions to plan ahead and participate fully in the process,” he added.
The Fund directed tertiary institutions across the country to promptly update their student records on the Student Verification System (SVS) to allow seamless access for applicants in the new academic session.
It further disclosed that institutions yet to commence new sessions during the application window must notify NELFUND for concessions to accommodate their students.
While upkeep payments for beneficiaries in the 2024/2025 session will continue until November 2025, students have been reminded that they must reapply under the 2025/2026 cycle to keep accessing the benefits of the scheme.
NELFUND also cautioned institutions that failed to complete student verifications, stressing that their names would be published publicly for accountability and transparency.
The Fund urged applicants to liaise closely with their institutions, complete their records on time, and avoid missing out on the opportunity of benefitting from the government-backed interest-free loans.
For further inquiries, students were advised to contact NELFUND through its official communication channels, including email (info@nelf.gov.ng), social media platforms, or its website (www.nelf.gov.ng).
