The Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has assured Nigerians that their votes will count in the 2026 governorship and 2027 general elections.
Agboke gave the assurance on Sunday while addressing worshippers during a sensitisation programme on the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Region 43 Headquarters, Osogbo.
The REC urged eligible citizens to take the exercise seriously by registering and collecting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing it as the only effective means of influencing leadership in the country.
“The only thing you can do in Nigeria today is to carry your PVC and vote for the candidate of your choice,” Agboke declared.
“Go and collect your PVC. If we don’t do it, miscreants will be the ones elected into office.”
He emphasised that citizens had a civic responsibility to support INEC’s efforts to deliver credible elections, stressing that participation in the CVR exercise was key to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
“I am assuring you, in the house of God, that the election in Osun will be for the candidate of your choice. It will be free, fair and transparent,” he said.
The Osun REC revealed that the state had recorded encouraging progress in the ongoing CVR but expressed concern that many eligible voters were yet to participate.
“We have visited royal palaces, churches, mosques, marketplaces and other public centres to sensitise people. Engagement with stakeholders is continuous and we will sustain it until the end of the exercise,” he explained.
Agboke, who noted that the CVR exercise was nearing the end of its first phase, urged Nigerians who had not registered to take advantage of the opportunity by visiting INEC offices in their local governments or registering online.
He further assured that complaints from citizens would be promptly addressed to ensure a smooth process, adding that voter education remained central to credible elections.
“Proper education is needed. I assure you that any complaint brought to my attention will be promptly addressed,” he pledged.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that INEC recently intensified its voter sensitisation campaign across the country ahead of the off-cycle governorship elections next year and the 2027 general polls.
