Convener of the United Premier Movement (UPM), Chief Olalekan Shoyinka has lauded Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for the successful inauguration of commercial flight operations at the newly built Gateway International Airport, Iperu-Remo, describing it as a landmark legacy that will outlive his administration.
Shoyinka, in a congratulatory statement made available to PLATFORM TIMES, said the airport, alongside the reconstruction of the Ijebu Ode–Epe Expressway, stands as a bold testament to the governor’s vision of transforming Ogun into a hub of modern infrastructure and economic opportunities.
Shoyinka, popularly known as Ayinla Egba, noted that although details of the budgetary allocations for the projects were not publicly disclosed, their completion reflects visible and life-changing use of state resources.
“The Gateway International Airport and the Ijebu Ode–Epe Expressway are monumental feats that justify Ogun’s growing internally generated revenue.
“These projects have placed our state on the global map of infrastructural excellence, and for this, His Excellency deserves commendation,” he said.
While praising the achievements, Shoyinka urged the governor not to relent, stressing that road infrastructure across the state remained in dire need of attention.
He specifically called on the governor to rehabilitate abandoned road projects and reconstruct dilapidated ones, particularly those serving rural dwellers, traders, transporters, and commuters.
Shoyinka also advised Governor Abiodun to personally monitor the ongoing Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway reconstruction to ensure quality delivery.
“Such direct oversight will not only guarantee accountability but also reassure the people that their welfare is the governor’s priority,” he added.
The UPM convener further acknowledged recent patching of potholes in parts of the state capital, including Abiola Way, but lamented that many inner roads in Abeokuta remained impassable, worsening with the rainy season.
He warned that the situation could hamper commercial activities and endanger residents if not urgently tackled.
Quoting a popular Yoruba saying, “Yìnnì yìnnì k’ẹni o ṣe òmìì” — meaning appreciation inspires more — Shoyinka said the governor had earned kudos for the airport project but must deliver more democratic dividends, especially in Egbaland, before the end of his tenure.
“We say kudos for the laudable success of the Gateway International Airport project, and like Oliver Twist, we humbly ask for more. Ogun people need more impactful projects before 2027,” he declared.
The UPM leader prayed for God’s guidance for Governor Abiodun to continue serving Ogun with “wisdom and courage.”
