The political landscape in Enugu State is set for a major upheaval as Governor Peter Mbah prepares to lead the state’s entire political structure — including 24 members of the State House of Assembly and 260 councillors — into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The planned defection, described by insiders as the “death knell” of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu, will see the governor formally declare for the ruling party on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Enugu APC caretaker committee in Abuja on Friday, the party’s state caretaker chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, said the defection would mark the end of PDP’s 25-year dominance in the state.
“Political evangelism has started. We went to the governor, and he has agreed to move with us into APC. He is not coming alone; he is coming with the whole structure of Enugu PDP,”
Nwoye told a cheering crowd.
He said Mbah would be accompanied by members of the State Executive Committee of the PDP, National Assembly members from the state, and all local government chairmen and councillors.
Analysts say the defection could trigger one of the most significant political realignments in the South-East since 1999, potentially giving APC a strong foothold in a region long dominated by opposition parties.
Inaugurating the caretaker committee, the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, urged the new leadership to consolidate the expected wave of defections into a lasting political transformation.
“APC is home for all. The person who came yesterday, today, or tomorrow has equal rights. Our goal is simple — to expand, to win, and to deliver overwhelming victory in 2027,”
Yilwatda said.
The party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Emma Eneukwu, hailed the impending defection as a turning point for the region.
“We will no longer play second fiddle. With Enugu in APC, the Southeast has found its voice again,”he declared.
Party insiders hinted that the move could decimate PDP’s influence across the Southeast, trigger similar defections in Anambra and Abia states, and position APC as the dominant political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Where Enugu goes, the Southeast goes,” Nwoye added.
“Governor Mbah has transformed Enugu in two years. Now, he will anchor the APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the Southeast.”
