Woos broadcasters on voter education, misinformation battle

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for stronger collaboration with media organisations to promote voter education, strengthen transparency, and deepen democratic values across Nigeria.

This call was made on Wednesday when the management team of Vicinity 95.3 FM, Ikeji Ile, Ijesa, paid a courtesy visit to the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, at the Commission’s state headquarters.

Speaking during the visit, the General Manager of Vicinity FM, Mr. Akolade Adekola, said the station was committed to supporting INEC’s mandate through responsible reportage, civic enlightenment, and sustained public engagement.

Adekola noted that the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the working relationship between the Commission and the media, while exploring opportunities for strategic partnerships on voter sensitization and electoral awareness campaigns.

“Vicinity FM remains committed to being a reliable voice for democracy by ensuring that credible information about INEC’s programmes and policies reaches the people without distortion,” Adekola said.

In his response, Dr. Agboke commended the radio station for the initiative, describing the media as an indispensable ally in advancing electoral transparency and countering fake news.

“The role of the media cannot be overemphasized. We rely on you to help educate voters, correct misconceptions, and strengthen public confidence in the electoral system,” the REC stated.

He reaffirmed INEC’s readiness to collaborate with credible media platforms to enhance civic participation and sustain public trust in the nation’s democratic institutions.

“Media partnerships are crucial to deepening democratic culture and public trust in the electoral process,” Agboke added.

The visit also featured the presentation of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections to the Vicinity FM team, followed by a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
