Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has disclosed that he is under intense pressure from political figures to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mutfwang, however, vowed not to bow to the pressure, insisting that only God and the people who elected him have the authority to determine his political future.
Speaking during an event at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Jos over the weekend, the governor dismissed rumours of an imminent defection, describing them as false and politically motivated.
“It is true that they have been putting pressure on me,” Mutfwang said. “But I told them that only two people can authorise me to change my party — one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people. Have you asked me to go anywhere?”
The audience reportedly responded with a thunderous “No!”
The remarks came amid speculations that Mutfwang was considering joining the APC — a claim that Plateau APC leaders had earlier dismissed.
At a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, APC members rejected a motion suggesting that Mutfwang might defect to their party. The motion, moved by Festus Fuanter, a former deputy national secretary of the APC, was turned down through a voice vote.
“We don’t want anybody coming to our party. You do your thing, and we’ll do ours,” Fuanter said, stressing that the APC remained confident in its political strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reacting, Mutfwang described the rejection as an act of fear, saying his political opponents were unsettled by his growing popularity.
“Those who are rejecting me for what I didn’t even ask for are wasting their time,” he said.
“The truth is that 60 to 70 percent of the people in the APC in Plateau would be happy to have us join them. They know I will not do that — and that’s why they’re angry and twisting things.”
The governor, who reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, added that he would not be distracted by political propaganda.
“I won’t dwell on the matter; it’s a story for another day,” he concluded.
Mutfwang’s comments come at a time when several PDP governors have defected to the APC since the 2023 elections.
Among them are Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, and Peter Mbah of Enugu. Bayelsa State governor, Duoye Diri, has also reportedly resigned from the PDP and is set to join the ruling party.
Political analysts say Mutfwang’s firmness could strengthen the PDP’s foothold in Plateau, a state that has remained a key battleground in Nigeria’s power politics.
