A labour and civil rights advocate, Comrade ‘Yinka Folarin, has charged the Ogun State Government to stop blaming past administrations and focus on delivering tangible legacies that will improve the lives of the people.
Folarin, in a strongly worded statement titled “Ogun State Government Must Be Reawakened: Leave the Past and Focus on the Legacies You Intend to Leave Behind”, accused the Dapo Abiodun-led administration of hiding under inherited liabilities despite enjoying increased internally generated revenue (IGR) and tripled federal allocations.
He lamented that despite being in power for over six years, the administration continues to shift blame for its failures.
“If, at this time, the government is still blaming past administrations, then something is definitely wrong somewhere,” he said.
“Even with tripled allocations and increased IGR, excuses for failure persist. It is doubtful that this administration, even if given ten more years, would not still come back to blame its predecessors.”
Folarin stated that the people of Ogun State are not blind to the contrasting performance of previous governments and accused the current administration of neglecting governance.
“While one may be tempted to keep quiet and watch events unfold, conscience will not allow silence when the people continue to suffer under poor governance and flimsy excuses for failure,” he said.
The activist urged Governor Abiodun to conduct an independent and holistic assessment of infrastructure across the state’s three senatorial districts, insisting that Ogun was “fast becoming next to nothing” in terms of development.
He described the government’s achievements as lopsided and questioned the lack of accessible roads linking key projects like the Cargo Airport and the Stadium.
“Yes, we have the Cargo Airport. Yes, we have the Stadium. But are the roads and routes linking these infrastructures anything to be proud of?” he queried.
Folarin also criticised local government councils for being visible only in revenue collection without tangible development to justify their existence.
“Our local governments must also be challenged. They aggressively pursue revenue with no commensurate impact,” he said.
He argued that since all former governors of the state since 1999 now belong to the same political party as the incumbent, the persistent complaints about inherited liabilities were no longer tenable.
“The continuous lamentations of the incumbent government cannot be mistaken for anything other than an admission that the ruling party and its past leaders have collectively failed Ogun State,” he said.
Folarin called on Governor Abiodun to “wake up to his responsibilities” and focus on leaving enduring legacies instead of engaging in political blame games.
“Trading blames after six years in the saddle is a no-go area. The best time to return to the path of responsible governance is now,” he declared.
He concluded by warning that in less than two years, the people of Ogun State would evaluate the administration’s performance based on real impact, not rhetoric.
“Ogun State Government must be reawakened. Leave the past behind and focus on the legacies you intend to leave,” Folarin said.
