The Ogun State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights has kicked against the proposed demolition and rebuilding of the Commissioners’ Quarters, Legislative Quarters and the Kobape Mechanic Village, describing the plan as a “wasteful, anti-people project” designed to benefit political cronies.
In a statement on Tuesday, signed by the state chairman, Comrade Funmilayo Onifade, and secretary, Comrade Ali Adesina, the rights group alleged that the project, packaged as a “Housing Regeneration Scheme” by the state Ministry of Housing, was a ploy to forcefully relocate occupants and privatise strategic government lands.
CDHR claimed the move fits into a pattern of what it called questionable land allocations by the current administration, citing the alleged “Ibara GRA land allocation scandal,” where it accused government officials of sharing public property among a privileged circle.
“The proposed relocation and demolition is nothing but another calculated attempt to grab and privatise major state lands for cronies,” the statement read.
“At a time Ogun residents are crying for motorable roads, functional infrastructure and responsive governance, the government is prioritising luxury accommodation for political office holders.”
The group alleged that part of the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta had also been “earmarked for private acquisition,” warning that any attempt to push forward with the plan “will be met with mass resistance.”
“This scheme is insensitive, inordinate and does not serve any developmental purpose. It is a deliberate ploy to siphon public resources under the guise of property rejuvenation,” CDHR said.
The organisation urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to immediately halt the move and redirect state funds to repair failing roads and decaying public infrastructure across the state.
It also called on the Ogun State House of Assembly to reject any plan requiring lawmakers to vacate their quarters by January 2026, warning that endorsing such a proposal would amount to betraying public trust.
“The legislature must not align with policies rooted in greed, misgovernance and injustice,” the statement added.
CDHR reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising residents for peaceful protests if the proposal is not withdrawn, insisting that “the masses deserve genuine dividends of democracy, not elitist housing schemes masked as development.”
The state government had yet to respond to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
