Court Clears PDP To Hold National Convention In Ibadan Despite Abuja Order

A High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday gave the Peoples Democratic Party the green light to proceed with its national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in the state capital.

Justice A. L. Akintola granted the order while ruling on an ex parte application filed by a party member, Folahan Malomo Adelabi, effectively countering last Friday’s order of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja which halted the event.

The Abuja court had restrained the PDP and its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, from going ahead with the convention following a suit filed by three top party officials — Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary).

The plaintiffs alleged that the preparations for the convention violated the PDP constitution, the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, and sought an injunction stopping the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising any process arising therefrom.

They argued that due process was not followed in the build-up to the planned exercise expected to produce new national officers for the opposition party.

However, in the fresh ruling, the Oyo court directed the party’s leadership to proceed with preparations and conduct the convention as scheduled, pending the hearing of the substantive matter.

The conflicting judicial orders have once again placed the party at the centre of legal and internal leadership battles that have plagued its structure in recent months.

As at press time, the PDP had yet to issue a formal response to the Ibadan ruling or clarify how it intends to navigate the contradictory court directives.

Sources within the party, however, said  that emergency consultations were ongoing among national leaders to avoid a legal contempt crisis while ensuring the convention holds.

The development adds a fresh layer of uncertainty to the PDP’s internal restructuring efforts ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
