The Kano State House of Assembly has begun legislative steps to enforce the use of Hausa as the primary language of instruction in schools across the state, a move lawmakers say will enhance learning and preserve cultural identity.
The bill, titled Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill, was introduced on Tuesday by Musa Kachako (NNPP–Takai) during plenary.
Kachako argued that prioritising mother–tongue education is in line with global best practices, citing countries like China, Japan, and India which, according to him, advanced in science and technology by teaching early–stage pupils in their indigenous languages.
“Adopting Hausa as the primary language of instruction will improve comprehension, reduce failure rates, and curb school dropouts,” Kachako said.
“It will also strengthen the foundation of learning, make science and technology subjects easier to grasp, and promote cultural identity and inclusiveness.”
The bill has been referred to the House Standing Committee on Education for further scrutiny and recommendations.
In a related development, Zakariyya Nuhu (NNPP–Gabasawa) presented a motion calling for the establishment of a College of Agriculture in Gabasawa Local Government Area.
He said over 60 per cent of residents in the 11 wards of his constituency are farmers who would benefit from improved agricultural education and economic opportunities.
Meanwhile, the House acknowledged a letter from the state executive seeking approval for the establishment of a polytechnic in Gaya Local Government Area and the creation of a Kano Local Government Service Commission.
Speaker Ismail Falgore referred both requests to relevant committees for legislative action.
The education–focused move places Kano among Nigerian states seeking stronger integration of local languages in formal education — a policy many experts argue can boost learning outcomes but which critics fear could hinder competitiveness in a globalised economy.
