Former Kano State Governor and former Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said he considers himself to be living in the “extra time” of life at 70, declaring readiness for the “final whistle” whenever it comes.

Shekarau, who marked his 70th birthday on Wednesday, spoke during a media interactive session in Kano, where he reflected on his journey, life lessons, and faith.

“My life is in extra time, and I’m ready for the final whistle,” he said. “At 70, anything beyond this is a gift from Allah, and I remain grateful for every moment.”

The former minister, who once served as a two-term governor of Kano State, expressed deep gratitude to God for sparing his life and granting him the opportunity to serve in various capacities.

“My first gratitude is to Almighty Allah who has graciously spared my life through all that I have achieved,” he said. “I also thank my parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues who have supported me along the way. Their guidance has shaped the person I am today.”

Speaking on what has guided him through his personal and public life, Shekarau highlighted discipline, humility, service to humanity and reliance on God.

“The beauty of life is not in how happy you are, but how happy others are because of you,” he said. “Serving humanity has always been my true measure of success.”

The former governor used the occasion to preach forgiveness, urging Nigerians to let go of grudges and embrace peace.

“I have forgiven all who may have wronged me, and I seek forgiveness from anyone I may have offended,” he declared. “At this stage of life — extra time — the referee can blow the final whistle anytime.”

He urged younger generations to prioritise character, patience, and hard work, stressing that leadership is meaningful only when it benefits others.

Shekarau remains one of the influential figures in Nigerian politics, noted for his calm style and advocacy for ethical leadership and education reforms.

The event drew associates, journalists and political allies who praised his contributions to public service and nation-building.
