The Anambra State Police Command has announced a complete restriction on all vehicular movement within and outside the state during Saturday’s governorship election.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the ban will take effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., covering every road across the state, including interstate highways.
According to SP Ikenga, the move follows a unanimous decision by Security Service Commanders at a November 5 meeting held at the Police State Headquarters in Awka.
“The restriction aims to prevent political thugs and criminal elements from disrupting the electoral process,” he said, adding that all motorized transport—including private cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, tricycles, motorcycles, and shuttle buses—is affected.
Only essential personnel, including accredited INEC officials, observers, journalists, medical staff, and emergency responders, will be exempted.
Exempted individuals must carry valid identification and clearance passes at all times.
SP Ikenga urged residents and motorists to comply with the directive to safeguard lives, property, and ensure a peaceful election. He called on voters to cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state.
Interstate travelers were advised to seek alternative routes, as any violation of the restriction will attract stringent enforcement measures.
The police reiterated that the directive is designed to create a secure environment for voters to freely exercise their constitutional rights.
