Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Sunday paid a surprise visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his private residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State — a gesture many observers described as a symbolic end to their long-standing political hostility.

The visit comes ahead of Fayose’s 65th birthday, scheduled for November 15, and forms part of a series of goodwill visits from prominent Nigerian leaders in recent days.

Photographs shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, showed the two leaders in warm embrace and cheerful conversation.

One of the images captured Obasanjo, dressed in white native attire and a green cap, playing Ayo, a traditional Yoruba board game, while Fayose watched with admiration.

For years, Obasanjo and Fayose were known for their open political feud, with the former President once describing Fayose as “unruly,” and Fayose accusing Obasanjo of arrogance and political intolerance. Sunday’s visit, therefore, marks a rare moment of reconciliation between the two former leaders.

Fayose’s visit follows that of former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who had earlier visited the former governor to felicitate with him ahead of his birthday, explaining that he would not be available on the celebration day.

Both visits have been seen as indications of growing political realignment among Nigeria’s old guard, particularly in the South-West region.

During his interaction with Obasanjo, Fayose was said to have expressed deep respect for the elder statesman and appreciation for his leadership experience.

Political analysts in Abeokuta described the meeting as “a quiet but significant signal” that the Ekiti-born politician may be mending fences ahead of his re-engagement in national politics.
