Senate Dismisses Alleged Plot to Impeach Akpabio, Says Kalu Was Quoted Out of Context

The Senate has dismissed speculations about an alleged plot to impeach the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, describing the reports as baseless and a deliberate attempt to create tension within the National Assembly.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), made the clarification during Tuesday’s plenary after media reports quoted Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) as admitting that there had been “attempts” to remove Akpabio.

Bamidele said the statement attributed to Kalu was taken out of context, adding that the Senate remained united under Akpabio’s leadership and would not tolerate distractions.

> “From my discussion with Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, it was obvious that his statement was quoted out of context,” Bamidele explained.
“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, no discussion whatsoever, about removing the President of the Senate. We are completely united and focused on urgent national issues before us.”

He said reports suggesting any internal rift were “deliberately planted to cause confusion in the minds of Nigerians,” insisting that senators were working harmoniously across party lines.

“At this time, we are developing a zero tolerance for distractions because there are critical matters of national importance we must attend to,” the Senate Leader stressed.

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano North), who presided over the session, commended Bamidele for the clarification, saying it was important to set the record straight.

Earlier, Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), had told journalists that while there were “initial misunderstandings,” the issue was quickly resolved internally.

“We are one big family in the Senate,” Kalu said. “There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We remain united behind the leadership.”

The clarification puts to rest days of speculation about cracks in the Senate leadership and alleged plots to unseat Akpabio.

Bamidele reaffirmed that the 10th Senate would continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in driving legislative reforms and addressing the country’s socio-economic challenges.

“There is no tension in this Senate,” he concluded. “We are united behind the President of the Senate, and there is no reason to contemplate removing any presiding officer.”

With the Senate’s formal denial, attention now shifts back to ongoing legislative work on key national issues, including budget consideration, economic reforms, and national security oversight.
