Two PDP Governors Disown Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu Expulsion, Fault Party Leaders Over Lack of Consultation

Two serving governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have openly disowned the controversial expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose; and ex–National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, in separate statements on Saturday, said they were neither consulted nor part of the decision, insisting that the move was reckless and capable of deepening the crisis within the opposition party.

The PDP had earlier expelled the trio at its national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a motion by former Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George, which was seconded by Bauchi State PDP chairman, Samaila Burga.

But Mutfwang, in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, dissociated himself from the action, saying the matter was never discussed by the PDP Governors’ Forum nor tabled before the National Executive Committee.

He maintained that the proposal did not represent his position and warned that expelling high-profile members at a time the PDP was battling internal disunity was counterproductive.

“This issue was never discussed at the PDP Governors’ Forum or at NEC. I had no prior knowledge of the motion presented at the convention,” he said.

“Expelling key stakeholders at this sensitive period is not a strategic step toward resolving the internal crisis confronting our party.”

Mutfwang said the PDP needed unity, dialogue, and a collective reset to rebuild trust among its members.

Shortly after, Governor Fintiri also distanced himself from the expulsion, describing the move as unhealthy and dangerous to the party’s stability.

“I wish to categorically state that I dissociate myself from the position of expelling the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Governor Wike, from the PDP,” Fintiri said in a statement issued on Saturday.

He stressed that he played no role in the push to remove Wike, Fayose, and Anyanwu, insisting that the decision could plunge the party into further turmoil.

“This decision is not in the best interest of the party, and I will not support anything that could lead to its disintegration,” he said. “Peace and reconciliation are the only ways forward for our great party.”

The Adamawa governor urged party leaders to prioritise healing and internal reforms over punitive actions, warning that the PDP may suffer more setbacks if the crisis is not handled with caution.

Their separate reactions have now exposed widening cracks within the party leadership, as two sitting governors have publicly denounced a major decision taken at the convention.

The PDP has been grappling with a lingering internal rift since the 2023 elections, with competing blocs struggling for control and direction ahead of future contests.
