The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), on Wednesday matriculated 6,356 students for the 2025/2026 academic session — the highest number of entrants admitted by the institution since its establishment 38 years ago.

The ceremony, which held at the Professor Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building, also featured the University’s 13th Commencement Lecture.

Addressing the fresh students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, described the record intake as a landmark in the University’s history, saying the surge in enrolment reflected the confidence of Nigerian parents and admission seekers in FUNAAB’s academic standards.

Kehinde charged the new intakes to uphold discipline, modest dressing, a minimum of 70 per cent class attendance and strict compliance with university regulations, stressing that FUNAAB “remains a training ground for future leaders.”

He reaffirmed the institution’s zero tolerance for any form of misconduct and noted that student union activities on campus must be anchored on dialogue and responsible engagement.
“The University will protect your rights, but you must also respect the laws guiding your stay,” the VC added.

Delivering the commencement lecture titled “Future Leaders of Character in Agriculture: Building Capacity Today for National and Global Impact Tomorrow,” a scholar at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ibadan, Prof. Subuola Fasoyiro, urged the students to prioritise character, competence and capacity as the pillars of leadership.

Fasoyiro outlined key attributes needed to shape the future — vision, strategic thinking, courage, integrity, teamwork, resilience and emotional intelligence. She also identified the 6Cs of leadership: clarity, commitment, capacity, character, consistency and contribution.

“The future is predictable. What you invest in your character today will shape your reputation tomorrow,” she said.

The matriculation underscored FUNAAB’s renewed commitment to expanding access to quality education and strengthening its mandate of producing globally relevant graduates in agriculture, science, technology and entrepreneurship.
