Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested two herders accused of trespassing on community farmlands and destroying crops during a routine harvest-season patrol in Makurdi, Benue State.

The incident occurred on November 20, 2025, when troops deployed at Zongo Akiki intercepted the herders after they allegedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents.

In a statement signed on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the operation, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, said, “In a sustained effort to protect farmers and guarantee food security during the peak of the harvest season, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two herders who were found trespassing and destroying crops on a community farmland in Makurdi, Benue State.

“The vigilant troops intercepted the two herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents, resulting in damage to crops.

“The swift intervention prevented further destruction and possible confrontation between the herders and the affected farmers. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action.”

The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands when disputes arise.

He warned that violence or reprisals only heighten tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.

Gara also cautioned herders to be law-abiding and desist from criminal behaviour that threatens peace and order.

He reaffirmed the operation’s commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring a secure environment for legitimate economic activities.

PUNCH Online reported on Monday that troops of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3, as part of Operation Whirl Stroke, arrested a suspected notorious kidnap kingpin in Southern Taraba.

The operation, conducted on November 23, 2025, saw soldiers apprehend Alhaji Abubakar Bawa in Wukari Local Government Area as he attempted to flee.

Bawa is believed to be closely linked to Umar Musa, another notorious kidnap suspect arrested by 6 Brigade troops a day earlier, on November 22, 2025.

Preliminary investigations indicate that both men are part of a broader criminal syndicate responsible for multiple kidnappings, violent attacks and other coordinated criminal activities across the region.
