Gunmen attack Abia governor’s advance team in Imo

Three Staff members attached to Governor Alex Otti of Abia State were on Tuesday morning attacked by fleeing gunmen around the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The spokesperson for Governor Otti, Njoku Ukoha stated thisa on Tuesday in a statement.

The attack occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State on Tuesday morning.

Ukoha dispelled fears that Otti was attacked adding that no life was lost during the incident.

The yet-to-be identified gunmen had attacked the advance team convoy of Otti heading to the airport in Imo. The governor was not in the convoy.

Ukoha said, “In the early hours of today, December 2nd, an advance team of three members from the Office of the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, on duty to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Imo State, was attacked by unidentified gunmen. The incident occurred between Umuowa and Ihite junction, shortly before the Sam Mbakwe Airport Junction in Imo State.

“The general public is hereby informed that the convoy of Governor Otti was not involved in this attack, and no lives were lost during the unfortunate incident”.

The Imo State Police Command expressed surprise over the attack on the advance team of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.

Police spokesperson for Imo State Command, DSP Henry Okoye said the command had not been notified formally.

He said, “I’m surprised at the Abia State Governor’s convoy attack but we are yet to get a formal report.”
