The Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday intensified its internal cleanup as its newly inaugurated National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), formally took over leadership and immediately enforced the expulsion of several high-profile members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, over alleged persistent anti-party activities.
The handover ceremony, held at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, marked the end of Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum’s tenure as acting chairman and the beginning of a leadership Turaki described as “disciplined, united and determined to rescue Nigeria in 2027.”
Speaking at an enlarged meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) shortly after receiving the handover documents, Turaki said the PDP had entered a new era of internal cohesion.
“The PDP will never die. This party is bigger than any individual or group of individuals,” Turaki declared.
“Those who have chosen to dine with our opponents while still wearing our colours have been shown the way out. This is the beginning of a disciplined and purposeful opposition.”
He vowed to enforce strict discipline, rebuild party organs across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and restore confidence among Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general election.
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the official issuance of Certificates of Expulsion to members previously sanctioned by the party over alleged betrayal and anti-party conduct.
The expulsions were ratified at the party’s National Convention held on November 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, and executed under Article 59(3) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
Those affected include: Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT; Ayo Fayose, former Ekiti State Governor ; Samuel Anyanwu, former National Secretary ; Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), former National Legal Adviser ; Umar Bature, former National Organising Secretary ; Abdulrahman Mohammed, former National Vice Chairman (North Central) ; Austine Nwachukwu, former Imo State Chairman ; Abraham Amah, former Abia State Chairman and several others
In a brief statement, the NWC stressed that the expulsions were “final and irrevocable.”
In his farewell remarks, the outgoing chairman, Ambassador Damagum, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to lead the party through challenging times.
He pledged full support for the reforms being introduced by the new leadership.
“We served to the best of our abilities. We remain committed to the success of this party under its new leadership,” Damagum said.
Turaki pledged immediate action to heal divisions and rebuild confidence in the PDP, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress of plunging Nigeria into deeper economic and security turmoil.
“No amount of money, blackmail, or intimidation will stop the PDP. We are alive, strong, and marching to victory in 2027,” he said.
He also promised to engage grassroots structures more aggressively and restore the PDP’s reputation as the country’s leading opposition force.
