The United States’ State Department has announced a contribution to humanitarian efforts in the North-West, providing $5m to the United Nations Children’s Fund to address acute malnutrition among children in the region.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the US Mission to Nigeria, the funding will enable UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition support to at least 70,000 children with acute malnutrition in Northwest Nigeria.

The statement said the assistance will go toward essential supplies, noting that these funds will be used by UNICEF to provide ready-to-use food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies.

It read, “The State Department provided $5m to UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition support to at least 70,000 children with acute malnutrition in Northwest Nigeria.

“These funds will be used by UNICEF to provide ready-to-use food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies.

“This commitment to donate lifesaving assistance affirms US global leadership, strength, and compassion.”

The North-West faces serious food insecurity and malnutrition, worsened by conflict and displacement, which disrupts access to farmland and basic services.

UNICEF runs nutrition programmes in the region, providing ready-to-use therapeutic food and medical supplies to treat children with acute malnutrition.

The US is a key donor supporting UNICEF and other humanitarian agencies in Nigeria, contributing funding to protect vulnerable children in crisis-affected areas.
