The Provost of De Potter College of Health Technology, Oru-Ijebu in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Dr Oluwaseyi Adeware, has urged the institution’s graduating students to prioritise integrity, empathy and professionalism as they begin their careers in the health sector.
Adeware made the call on Friday during the combined graduation ceremony of 422 students for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions.
Ruth Adesida, who finished with a CGPA of 3.99, emerged as the overall best graduating student for the 2023/2024 session, while Abigail Odulana, with a CGPA of 3.95, was named overall best for the 2024/2025 session.
In his address, the Provost charged the graduands to be worthy ambassadors of the college, upholding the high standards of training and ethics they acquired.
“My dear graduating students, today marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another,” he said.
“You have conquered the tests, survived the trials, and proven yourselves worthy of the honour bestowed upon you today. As you step into the professional world, remember that your certificate is more than a document — it is a call to service, a responsibility to humanity, and a commitment to integrity.
“In every hospital ward, PHC clinic or community where you serve, let your work speak of excellence. Be disciplined in your practice, compassionate in your service, and humble in your achievements. You must note that life is about the ability to learn, unlearn and re-learn.”
Adeware acknowledged that the world outside the classroom would test their resolve, but urged them to hold firmly to the values of hard work, honesty, empathy and humility—values he said define the college’s training philosophy.
Giving an update on the institution’s progress, he noted that the college has undergone significant transformation across its academic and physical infrastructure, including the addition of new lecture halls, modern laboratories, staff quarters and expanded hostel facilities.
He added that the college library has been digitised, providing access to thousands of e-books and journals, while the ICT Centre now drives e-learning, digital results management and online academic services.
According to him, the institution has also embraced sustainability through solar energy installations at the ICT Centre, improved waste management systems and a green campus initiative—efforts he said reflect the college’s commitment not only to training health workers but also to promoting healthy living.
Adeware also disclosed that the college recently recorded a 100 per cent pass rate in national qualifying examinations across all accredited programmes, adding that graduates of the school continue to excel during clinical postings, industrial attachments and national service.
He expressed appreciation to the Governing Board, staff, students and host community for their support over the years, describing the institution’s growth as “a story of faith and perseverance.”
Speaking on behalf of the graduating students, Adesida thanked the institution’s management, lecturers and parents for their support. She encouraged her colleagues to be “symbols of service, empathy and excellence” as they pursue careers in the health sector.
Dignitaries at the event included the Chairman of Ijebu North Local Government, Bolaji Odusanya; the Gbegande of Ososa, Oba Adetoye Abdulmojeed Alatise; and the Oloru of Oru, Oba Olusegun Osinbajo, among others.
De Potter College of Health Technology is one of the private monotechnics in Ogun State, established to train middle-level health manpower for primary and secondary healthcare systems.
Over the years, colleges of health technology across Nigeria have played a major role in filling personnel gaps in areas such as community health, environmental health, health information management, laboratory technology, and other critical frontline services.
The institution has recorded improvements in performance during national qualifying examinations conducted by regulatory bodies such as the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria and the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria — agencies responsible for ensuring uniform standards in training and practice.
