Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has dismissed reports linking him to terrorism financing, describing the allegation as “entirely fabricated” and aimed at destroying his reputation.
Emefiele, in a strongly worded statement on Sunday, said the claim was a deliberate act of mischief orchestrated by unnamed individuals bent on misleading the public.
He said, “Categorically and unequivocally, I say that this claim is entirely fabricated, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to malign my name, mislead the public, and sow confusion for motives best known only to the publishers and their sponsors.”
According to him, the allegation—which circulated online—was not only false but also dangerous, as it trivialised the national fight against terrorism.
“The fight against terrorism is too important to be trivialised by irresponsible reporting, and Nigerians deserve better than such reckless misinformation,” he stated.
Emefiele insisted that neither during his tenure as CBN governor nor in his private life had he been linked to terrorism or invited by any security agency over such matters.
“Throughout my service to the nation or even in my private life, at no time have I been involved in any activity remotely connected to terrorism, terrorist financing, or any action that threatens the peace and security of our nation,” he said.
He also clarified that he had never met or interacted with the person who reportedly made the claim in the viral publication.
Describing the allegation as “pure mischief crafted by misguided elements,” Emefiele urged Nigerians to disregard the report, while calling on the media to exercise professionalism and verify information before publication.
“I urge the public to disregard the publication in its entirety. I also urge the press to refrain from publishing falsehoods and sensational claims without evidence or due diligence,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly filed amended charges against the former CBN governor in one of the cases currently before the court, even as he secured permission to travel for medical reasons.
