The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the National Assembly to enhance national security, particularly along Nigeria’s borders.
According to a post by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, on the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Tuesday, the assurance was given by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, during a visit by the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Border Security, led by Mohammed Isa Anka.
Shaibu said, “The army is actively conducting operations in border areas to tackle persistent cross-border threats, including transnational crimes, smuggling, and infiltration of hostile elements.
“The military’s efforts are hampered by numerous illegal entry points, as well as limited mobility assets and logistics support.”
Highlighting the need for a coordinated approach, the COAS called for joint efforts between the military, lawmakers, and other security agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, Nigerian Immigration Service, and Nigerian Customs, to improve national security. He also stressed the army’s “relentless commitment” to supporting government initiatives aimed at combating security threats.
Shaibu urged the National Assembly to provide increased funding for surveillance technologies and the establishment of forward operating bases in border communities to strengthen intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities.
In response, the chairman of the Ad-Hoc Committee, Mohammed Anka, commended the Nigerian Army for securing Nigeria’s borders with Chad, Cameroon, and other neighboring countries.
He assured the military of continued cooperation and robust support to enhance national security.
