Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has finally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Fubara, who was previously one of the few remaining governors in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, on Tuesday, said he had received approval to leave the party.
With this defection, Fubara becomes the latest PDP governor to move to the APC.
Confirming his decision at the meeting where he made the announcement, Fubara said he had visited President Bola Tinubu the previous day and that “the reason for the visit was not for personal interest but for state interest consultation.”
“I do not want to make any mistake this time around, and not to step on any landmine anyone is laying for us,” he said.
According to Fubara, he was permitted to leave the PDP because “we have no protection.”
“The most interesting part of the meeting is what you all have been waiting for. We have taken that decision today; we are moving to the APC,” he declared.
Fubara has now joined the growing list of governors originally elected on the PDP platform who later defected to the APC.
Most of these governors and other politicians who resigned from the party that brought them to power often cite the need to align with the Federal Government as their major reason.
Enugu State
On Tuesday, October 14, Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, announced his defection to the APC.
In a state broadcast, Mbah said he was leaving the PDP to better connect the South-East state to the Federal Government.
The PDP governor defected with members of the National Assembly, state House of Assembly, councillors, council chairmen and other influential politicians in the state.
The APC leadership held a grand reception in Enugu to welcome him.
Bayelsa State
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, ended months of speculation when he officially announced his resignation from the PDP, citing “obvious reasons.”
At a State Executive meeting in November, he said his decision followed extensive consultation with leaders of the state.
Diri added that he was not leaving alone, as 23 members of the state House of Assembly would be moving with him.
“So, today, I have formally resigned from the PDP for very obvious reasons,” he said.
Delta State
On April 23, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, left the PDP for the APC.
According to the information released by the state Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, the move “was taken to build the bond of love in our state, advance the security and welfare of our people, and ensure the development of Delta because all politics is local.”
Akwa Ibom State
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, announced his switch from the PDP to the APC on June 6, 2025.
He said he moved because he could not guarantee electoral victory under the PDP.
Eno stated, “We have worked very hard but we know that at the national level, our party is not performing as expected.”
Osun gov joins Accord Party
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on December 2, 2025, formally resigned from the PDP, citing persistent leadership turmoil at the party’s national level.
In a statement shared on his Instagram page and other official handles, Adeleke confirmed that he submitted his resignation to party officials in Sagba Abogunde, Ward 2, Ede North Local Government, on November 4, 2025.
Adeleke has also officially joined the Accord Party, days after leaving the PDP.
The governor made the announcement on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in the presence of national and state leaders of the party.
Plateau, Taraba situations
Meanwhile, in December 2025, a group of PDP members from across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas held a rally in Jos, urging Governor Caleb Mutfwang to defect to the opposition APC.
There have been earlier speculations, denial and series of back and forth linking the Plateau governor to other parties.
Similarly, Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has sealed his move to the APC.
In November, he postponed his planned defection from the PDP to the APC following the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
On Tuesday, the Taraba State Chairman of the APC, Ibrahim Tukur, has confirmed that Kefas will formally join the party in January 2026.
