Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has emphatically denied claims that he is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for terrorism financing or for operating 46 bank accounts.

In a statement issued on Wednesday through his Media Assistant, Mohammed Doka, Malami described the allegations as “false, misleading and baseless”, urging Nigerians and media outlets to stop what he called a “media trial” against him.

“The Office of the former Attorney-General categorically refutes recent claims circulating in parts of the media regarding terrorism financing, the purported 46 bank accounts linked to Malami, and other unfounded insinuations,” the statement said.

Doka clarified that no security, intelligence, or law enforcement agency, in Nigeria or abroad, has investigated or charged Malami in relation to terrorism financing.

He further noted that the retired military officer cited in some reports explicitly denied accusing Malami, but that clarification was overshadowed by sensational headlines.

Highlighting Malami’s record, the statement noted that during his tenure as Attorney-General, he played a leading role in strengthening Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework, including the establishment of an independent Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

The statement concluded by appealing to Nigerians of goodwill to disregard the “concocted allegations”, describing the reports as part of a coordinated attempt at character assassination.

It expressed confidence that Malami would emerge stronger and better in the face of what it called political witch-hunts, misinformation, and intimidation.

“The concern, prayers, and support from Nigerians reaffirm our belief that truth, law, and reason will always prevail,” the statement added.

This denial comes amid recent online claims linking Malami to terrorism financing and a network of multiple bank accounts, which have generated widespread attention and speculation in the media.
