
Firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service on Sunday responded to a gas explosion that gutted a residential building in Temidere community, Reke, Asa Local Government Area of the state.
A statement by the Head Media and Publicity, Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the incident occurred at about 4:27 pm and involved a building made up of three-bedroom flats, all of which were affected by the fire following a sudden gas explosion.
According to the statement, ” On Sunday, 14th December 2025, at 16:27hrs, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire outbreak at Temidere Community, Reke, Asa Local Government Area, Kwara State.
“The incident involved a building comprising three-bedroom flats, all of which were affected by the fire following a sudden gas explosion.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident was caused by gas leakage, which led to the explosion and subsequent fire outbreak,” it stated.
According to him, firefighters swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings in the community.
“Our officers responded promptly and engaged the fire immediately. The containment operation helped to prevent further escalation and damage within the neighbourhood,” he said.
The statement quoted the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, who urged residents to be more cautious in the handling and use of gas, stressing the need for regular inspection of gas cylinders, hoses, and regulators.
“Residents must ensure proper ventilation when using gas, avoid faulty or expired equipment and shut off the gas supply immediately once leakage is suspected. Adhering to basic gas safety practices is critical to preventing explosions and loss of property,” he said.
The Kwara State Fire Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, assuring residents of continued rapid response to emergencies.
Gas-related fire incidents have remained a recurring challenge in parts of the country, often linked to poor handling of cooking gas and use of substandard equipment, prompting repeated safety advisories by fire and emergency agencies.
