The state of Nigerian universities is set to take center stage tonight as two eminent scholars lead a critical discourse on the perceived decline of the nation’s higher education system.
The 38th edition of the monthly Boiling Point Arena programme, themed “Quality vs Quantity: How Nigerian Universities Lost Their Competitive Edge in Global Standards and The Path to Rebuilding Excellence,” will hold tonight, Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 8pm.
Hosted by veteran media professional and public relations strategist Dr. Ayo Arowojolu, the session promises to probe whether Nigerian universities are victims of systemic neglect or complicit in their own diminishing standards.
Leading the discussion are Prof. Olusola Oyewole, Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities (AAU), Accra, Ghana, and former Vice-Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, alongside Emeritus Prof. Olukayode Amund, retired academic of the University of Lagos, Akoka.
Key issues to be explored include the root causes of the decline in academic standards, the institutional challenges undermining global competitiveness, and practical strategies for restoring Nigeria’s universities to international credibility.
The programme will feature Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola, Olowu of Owu Kingdom, as Keynote Speaker and Chair, heralding the discourse with insights from his long-standing engagement with education and community leadership.
Boiling Point Arena, which boasts a large online and broadcast following, will stream the discussion via Zoom and air live on six partnering radio stations across Lagos, Ogun, and Delta States, including WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM, and Kruzz 92.9FM. The programme will also be available on NSTV, GoTV channel 316.
Prof. Oyewole, known for his research excellence and leadership as Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and Emeritus Prof. Amund, will not only reflect on the factors that caused Nigeria’s universities to lose ground globally but will also outline a roadmap for revitalising higher education.
The discussion is expected to spark intense debates, shedding light on systemic failures while offering actionable solutions for rebuilding excellence in Nigerian tertiary education.
