Fatima Buhari, daughter of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has alleged that her father’s signature was forged on several official documents during his time in office, raising fresh concerns about internal manipulation within Nigeria’s highest seat of power.
The revelation is contained in From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, a new biography written by Charles Omole, where Fatima, a forensic auditor, detailed how she personally reviewed documents bearing what she described as fake versions of her father’s signature.
According to the book, Fatima said she presented the suspicious documents to Buhari while he was alive, noting that concerns over forged signatures were not raised by her alone, as others within government circles had also flagged similar issues.
She, however, stressed that the problem was not exclusive to the Buhari administration, adding that signature forgery had occurred under previous governments due to the size and complexity of Nigeria’s bureaucracy.
Beyond forged signatures, the biography also exposes alleged manipulation of the former president’s speeches and official directives after they had already received his approval.
The author quoted Fatima as recounting an incident during Buhari’s trip to the United States, where the president discovered that a speech he was reading at a conference was not the version he had authorised.
“You were stopping,” she reportedly told him after noticing his hesitation while reading. Buhari allegedly replied that the text had been altered without his knowledge. He then abandoned the script and spoke extemporaneously.
The book describes this as part of a broader pattern in which presidential directives were “diluted in transit” and statements subtly rephrased to suit other interests as documents moved through official channels.
“It was not always sabotage; sometimes, it was the slip of a large bureaucracy,” the book noted, adding, however, that “sometimes it was the work of a clique.”
More startlingly, the biography claims that the late president believed he was being monitored within the Presidential Villa. Fatima was quoted as saying that Buhari suspected his office and residence were bugged, prompting him to avoid verbal communication on sensitive matters.
According to the account, father and daughter sometimes exchanged written notes instead of speaking, out of fear that their conversations were being listened to.
The author further disclosed that some security chiefs who served under Buhari reportedly confirmed the discovery of unusual objects during routine security sweeps of the president’s office and bedroom, reinforcing his suspicions of surveillance.
The revelations have sparked renewed debate about internal accountability, bureaucratic control and the integrity of presidential processes during Buhari’s administration, even as the claims emerge posthumously and through a third-party account.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the presidency or security agencies regarding the allegations.
