Although we hope that nobody becomes ill, there is an advantage when they are a celebrity.
The words of King Charles, that he is managing his cancer well with appropriate support, is good to hear but the most important thing is that it encourages others to get checked regularly.
Although the exact nature of his cancer is not publicly known, Prostrate cancer is one of the more likely possibilities, a cancer with which I am familiar. For me a family history of it promoted early checks, its detection and subsequent treatment but sometimes these conditions arise unexpectedly so regular checking is important.
The other side of these celebrity illnesses is the support that arises. One of the best Australian Rules footballers, Neil Daniher, was afflicted with motor neurone disease, about 12 years ago and he is still helping to raise money although almost completely immobile now. His efforts have raised about $AU 120 million ($US 80 million, $UK 60 million) which is being used for research.
Nobody wants these illnesses but early detection, treatment and following instructions helps. Let’s try keeping ourselves healthy.
