The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the explosion that occurred at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity across the country.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong and cited on PDP’s X handle on Wednesday, the party said the attack was unacceptable and represented a failure of government at all levels to discharge its most basic responsibility of protecting lives and property.
The PDP noted that the continued loss of innocent lives, particularly in places of worship, underscores the severity of Nigeria’s security challenges and the urgent need for decisive action.
“This is totally unacceptable; the irreducible minimum the government should offer its people is the protection of lives and property. This administration has failed woefully in this respect and should rise to the occasion rather than resort to rhetoric and playing politics with security.
“We commiserate with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this senseless attack. No one should lose their life while worshipping God,” the statement read.
The opposition party warned that persistent attacks on religious centres pose a serious threat to Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of worship and could create an atmosphere of fear capable of undermining social and religious harmony.
The party further called on both the Federal and State Governments to move beyond what it described as “empty promises and political rhetoric” and instead deploy concrete, actionable security measures, especially during the yuletide season.
According to the PDP, the current state of insecurity in the country has become unbearable and must be addressed with urgency and seriousness
