The Ogun State chapter of the Labour Party has faulted Governor Dapo Abiodun over the procurement of new Sports Utility Vehicles for the 20 local government chairmen in the state, describing the move as insensitive and a reflection of misplaced priorities.
The party said the purchase came at a time when residents across the state are contending with deteriorating road networks, rising cost of living and poor access to basic amenities.
In a statement issued on Thursday and made available to journalists, the state chairman of the party, High Chief Oluwabukola Soyoye, criticised the Abiodun-led administration for what she described as a preference for luxury over the welfare of the people.
Soyoye lamented that several roads linking rural and urban communities remain in deplorable condition, while public hospitals, schools and markets are in dire need of urgent attention.
She said, “People are complaining daily about bad roads, flooding, lack of potable water and decaying public infrastructure. Yet, the government chose to spend huge public funds on luxury vehicles for political office holders.”
The Labour Party chairperson argued that the funds expended on the SUVs could have been better channelled towards critical areas such as road rehabilitation, healthcare delivery, education and poverty alleviation at the grassroots.
According to her, the action of the state government sends a wrong signal and reinforces the perception that the comfort of political elites is being prioritised above the wellbeing of ordinary citizens.
She added that local government chairmen, being the closest tier of government to the people, should demonstrate prudence, accountability and modesty in the management of public resources.
Soyoye called on Governor Abiodun to reconsider the decision and redirect state resources to projects that would have a direct and positive impact on the lives of Ogun residents.
She also urged citizens of the state to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their leaders, stressing that governance should be anchored on transparency, responsibility and people-centred policies.
The Labour Party chairman further said such values would define the party’s administration in Ogun State, expressing confidence that the party would provide an alternative leadership come May 29, 2027, under a Labour Party government.
