2027 Presidency: Atiku Denies Stepping Down For Obi, Slams Report As Fake

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has firmly dismissed reports claiming that he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race in favour of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, describing the claims as false and misleading.

Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, was alleged in some online reports to have stepped aside for Obi, the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the last election, as part of a purported agreement to support a one-term presidency in the interest of regional balance.

However, Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, debunked the report, saying it did not emanate from the former Vice President or any of his associates.

Reacting on Saturday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Ibe shared a screenshot of the report and wrote tersely, “Fake news: Not on the menu!”

The denial puts to rest speculations that Atiku had reached a political understanding with Obi ahead of the 2027 polls, amid increasing realignments within opposition circles.

The clarification is also coming against the backdrop of reports suggesting that Obi may be considering a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a development that has continued to fuel discussions about possible opposition coalitions ahead of the next general election.

Atiku has not publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidency, but his allies insist he remains a key political figure within the PDP and the wider opposition bloc.

Political observers say the swift denial underscores growing sensitivities around succession politics and alliance talks as Nigeria edges closer to another election cycle.
