President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that the Federal Government will proceed with the implementation of the new tax laws from January 1, 2026, declaring that there is “no going back” despite mounting objections and public debates across the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the President said the reforms were not designed to impose additional tax burdens on Nigerians but to harmonise the tax system, eliminate inefficiencies and strengthen the nation’s fiscal framework.

Tinubu acknowledged that the new tax regime has generated agitations in some quarters but maintained that no substantial issue had been raised to justify suspending or reversing the implementation timeline.

“The new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining Acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned,” the President said.

He described the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to build a fair, competitive and robust fiscal foundation for Nigeria, stressing that the focus is on structural reset rather than revenue hikes.

According to him, the laws are aimed at harmonisation, protection of citizens’ dignity and the strengthening of the social contract between the government and the people.

“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract,” Tinubu stated.

The President assured Nigerians that his administration would strictly adhere to due process in implementing the reforms and would continue to engage relevant stakeholders, including the National Assembly, to address concerns arising from the new laws.

He noted that while public discourse persists over alleged changes to certain provisions of the recently enacted tax laws, no compelling case has been established to disrupt the reform process.

“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” he added.

Tinubu further pledged that the Presidency would work closely with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any identified issues, reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to the integrity of enacted laws.

“I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” the statement concluded.

The new tax laws form a central pillar of the Tinubu administration’s economic reform agenda, which seeks to modernise Nigeria’s revenue system, curb multiple taxation and improve fiscal sustainability ahead of the 2026 rollout.
