Rivers Won’t Repeat Political Mistakes, Wike Declares

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that Rivers State residents will not repeat what he described as past political mistakes ahead of the 2027 general elections, signalling an early commencement of political mobilisation in the state.

Wike made the remark on Tuesday during a visit to Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he announced that political activities would formally begin in January 2026.

The immediate past governor of the oil-rich state cautioned the people against making political choices they could later regret, warning that such decisions often come with consequences.

“We won’t make mistakes again. The first one you have done – have they said thank you? So, if you make another mistake, that means they will drive you out,” Wike said, drawing loud reactions from supporters at the gathering.

Although he did not mention anyone by name, the comments were widely interpreted as a veiled reference to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his successor and erstwhile political ally, amid their lingering feud.

Fubara, who assumed office in 2023, has since been locked in a bitter power struggle over the control of Rivers State’s political structure, a crisis that has sharply divided the state’s political class.

The protracted rift between both camps plunged the state into months of political instability, culminating in a constitutional standoff that led to the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of the governor.
