EXCLUSIVE: ₦621 Billion Flows To Southwest States In 2025, Yet Poverty Persists

… Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti Residents Decry Poor Roads, Health, Education.

 Despite receiving massive monthly allocations from the federation account, residents of Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states continue to grapple with poor living standards, limited infrastructure, and persistent poverty, a review of 2025 allocations by PLATFORM TIMES reveals.

According to data obtained by PLATFORM TIMES from budgIT portal, the total net allocations to these five Southwest states over the first eleven months of 2025 amounted to ₦621,099,811,704.86, with Ogun State receiving ₦111,900,979,862.83 being  the fifth highest among the states, yet one of the worst-hit in terms of infrastructure and socio-economic indicators.

Ogun 

Ogun State’s allocations ranged from ₦8.56 billion in January to ₦12.91 billion in October.

The cumulative sum for January to November stood at ₦111,900,979,862.83. Despite this substantial inflow, many communities still face poor road networks, inconsistent power supply, and insufficient healthcare and education services.

Ekiti 

Ekiti received a total of ₦122,293,460,069.37 during the same period. Monthly allocations varied from ₦8.66 billion in January to ₦13.37 billion in October. However, residents continue to experience high poverty rates and underfunded social infrastructure.

Ondo 

Ondo State recorded the highest total among the five states at ₦182,011,506,541.78, receiving up to ₦20.05 billion in September. Yet, key sectors such as transportation, water supply, and public health lag behind despite these allocations.

Osun 

Osun State received ₦132,924,276,960.59 in 11 months, with allocations peaking at ₦15.64 billion in October. Reports indicate slow progress on road repairs, inadequate healthcare facilities, and limited electricity supply, reflecting a disconnect between funding and developmental outcomes.

Oyo 

Oyo State’s allocations totaled ₦172,969,588,270.29, topping ₦22.73 billion in October. Despite being among the wealthiest in terms of federal inflows, widespread poverty and decayed urban infrastructure remain persistent challenges.

While the figures suggest a substantial inflow of funds into these states, residents argue that the allocations have not translated into meaningful development.

Many towns in Ogun, for instance, still lack well-paved roads, modern health facilities, and quality education centers.

Power supply is inconsistent, and unemployment remains high, amplifying the poverty burden.

Experts argue that the disconnect stems from poor budget implementation, corruption, and mismanagement of resources.

Civil society organizations have urged state governments to prioritize infrastructure development and social welfare programs to ensure that allocations tangibly improve citizens’ lives.
