Delta governor mourns Punch correspondent |

The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Punch correspondent, Matthew Ochei, describing it as a painful national loss.

Ochei, 43, a native of Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state, died in the early hours of Tuesday.

He died following a brief illness. 

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the governor commiserated with the Ochei family, journalists, and the Delta State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

He described the late journalist as a dedicated professional who discharged his duties with courage, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.

He said: “Ochei’s commitment to truth, public enlightenment and ethical journalism earned him respect within and beyond the media industry.

“This is indeed a painful moment. 

“Delta has lost a fearless voice who informed and educated the public with professionalism and integrity.”

The governor said Ochei’s untimely death was a heavy blow to his family, the media community, and all believers in responsible journalism.

Oborevwori prayed that God grants the family, friends, and colleagues the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those he left behind. May God comfort them and grant the departed soul eternal rest,” he said.

He said the Delta State Government stands in solidarity with the NUJ and the media community at this time of grief.
