The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalaye Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, is ongoing and strictly in line with constitutional provisions.

The Assembly dismissed recent claims that the process had been suspended or abandoned as false and misleading.

In a statement released on Friday, the House confirmed that the impeachment proceedings formally commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, under the authority of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The statement was signed by Dr. Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints.

Dr. George disclosed that separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct have been served on both the Governor and his Deputy by the Speaker of the House.

The Assembly is awaiting their formal responses, which will trigger the subsequent stages of the constitutional process.

“The impeachment process is being conducted within the legal framework provided by the Constitution.

“As the House of Assembly, we are empowered to act on behalf of the people to check infractions and ensure compliance with constitutional governance by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other officer of the state government,” the statement read.

Dr. George also expressed concerns over what he described as deliberate misinformation circulating on social media and certain news platforms suggesting that the process had been halted. He urged the public to disregard such reports.

“We are aware of attempts by some individuals and media platforms to mislead the public into believing that the process has been suspended. This is false and designed to create disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.

The lawmaker emphasized that the House would not be intimidated or distracted by threats, blackmail, or pressure from groups that do not have the state’s interests at heart. He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to its constitutional duties.

The statement concluded with an expression of gratitude to Rivers State residents, stakeholders, and political leaders for their continued prayers, support, and engagement since the commencement of the impeachment process.
