Aproko Doctor berates ‘agbo defenders’, warns of kidney damage |

Popular health influencer and medical doctor, Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, has berated critics defending Nigeria’s roadside herbal drink, ‘Agbo’, warning that regular consumption can harm the kidneys.

The doctor triggered a debate on X on Wednesday after sharing a meme of kidneys “watching” a customer drink a 348th cup of agbo, suggesting repeated consumption could damage the organs.

In the replies, several users shared personal stories of older relatives who drank agbo daily and remained healthy.

A user with the handle @john322226 responded by citing his father’s experience.

“My father is 69 years old and till date he still drink Agbo. He’s still very healthy… We need to wrap up the bad PR about Agbo,” the commenter wrote

Egemba dismissed the argument as anecdotal. “So your daddy is the yardstick? Is that what you’re saying?” he replied, warning against what he described as survivorship bias.

Another user, @Oonyemaa, escalated the exchange with an insult-laden comment.

He wrote “I just dey look you, if u fess me d*e I go too flog your co*pse”.

Egemba clapped back by advising him to go for medical testing instead of trading abuse.

He said “Go and do a kidney function test first. Your kidneys fit don give up, that’s why the toxins in your blood are messing up your brain”.

The exchange took a sharper turn after a comment from @1freesou_l, mocked the doctor over his past brain surgery.

Akproko doctor responded with a blunt retort: “They removed a tumor in my brain; that tumor they removed and threw away is probably more intelligent than you.”

Despite the heated exchanges, Egemba maintained that his position was rooted in health advocacy, not ridicule.

He warned that unregulated herbal mixtures could contain toxins and heavy metals that gradually strain the kidneys, insisting that popularity does not equal safety.

The exchange reflects a wider tension in Nigeria between long-held herbal practices and modern medical advice.
