Tinubu Moves To Woo Kwankwaso, Strengthen APC In Kano

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to meet with the national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in what sources described as a high-stakes engagement capable of reshaping the political landscape of Kano and the wider North ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered on Tuesday that the anticipated meeting follows closely on the heels of a closed-door discussion between the President and Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, a political protégé of Kwankwaso, at Aso Rock on Monday.

Sources familiar with the development said Governor Yusuf played a key role in facilitating the planned engagement, as President Tinubu intensifies consultations across party lines to consolidate political stability and expand his governing coalition.

A senior All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in the North-West confirmed that the meeting was tentatively scheduled for later in the day, subject to the President’s official itinerary.

“The President is keen on broadening his political base and strengthening national cohesion,” the source said. “The talks are expected to centre on political cooperation, governance priorities and alignments ahead of 2027.”

Until recently, Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), had firmly resisted any return to the APC and reportedly cautioned Governor Yusuf against defecting.

However, his stance appears to have softened in recent weeks.

Addressing supporters at his residence, the former Kano governor hinted at a possible political realignment, saying he would consider a move if offered what he described as a “satisfactory deal” by the ruling party.

The back-to-back engagements between Tinubu, Yusuf and now Kwankwaso have heightened speculation over the future of the NNPP and the powerful Kwankwasiyya political structure in Kano.

While Governor Yusuf’s camp is said to be upbeat following his interaction with the President, it remains unclear whether both leaders are considering a joint exit from the party or pursuing separate political strategies.

Political analysts say any alignment between Kwankwaso and the APC would mark a major shift in northern politics and potentially weaken the proposed opposition “Third Force” coalition reportedly involving figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, with Kwankwaso seen as a key pillar.

For President Tinubu, securing the cooperation of a sitting Kano governor and the undisputed leader of one of the state’s most influential political movements would significantly strengthen the APC’s grip on Kano, widely regarded as a strategic battleground in national elections.

PLATFORM TIMES learnt that developments at the Presidential Villa are being closely monitored, with official confirmation of the meeting expected imminently.
