The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday visited President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, insisting that their meeting focused solely on governance matters and not political realignment.
Makinde, a senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, arrived at the Villa around 3:30 p.m., amid speculation that the visit could signal a shift in his political allegiance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, he dismissed such claims, stressing that he remains “comfortable” in the PDP.
“The President is the President of Nigeria, not just the APC. We were discussing governance issues,” Makinde said. “Matters such as insecurity and poverty alleviation are beyond party politics, and require a bipartisan approach.”
He noted that while he and Tinubu belong to different political parties, the welfare of Nigerians demands collaboration. “Politics is politics. We belong to different parties, but Nigeria is a project for all of us. Leaders must consult and work together to improve the lives of our people,” he said.
Makinde also denied any tension in his relationship with the President, describing their interaction as “harmonious” and focused on practical solutions rather than partisan disagreements.
His visit comes at a time when several PDP governors have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), fueling speculation about Makinde’s political future.
The Oyo State governor, however, emphasized that his priority remains effective governance, not party switching.
