
The Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, Prof. Adekunle Adeogun, on Friday said a total of 5,141 students would graduate at the institution’s 17th convocation ceremony, scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday.
Adeogun also disclosed that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund has helped many students remain in school, noting that during the ongoing 2025/2026 academic session, a total of 4,210 students of the university benefited from student loans amounting to N700m.
The Vice-Chancellor further revealed that the university would confer honorary Doctor of Science (Education) degrees on the First Lady and the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during the convocation.
He added that Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, would also receive honorary doctorate degrees in Education Management and Political Science, respectively.
Adeogun made the disclosures at a briefing held at the university’s Senate Building to highlight activities lined up for the convocation.
Giving a breakdown of the graduating students, the Vice-Chancellor said: “At this 17th convocation ceremony, a total of 4,785 regular students will be graduating from the university. Out of this number, 40 obtained First Class Honours, 1,466 earned Second Class Upper Division, 2,768 made Second Class Lower Division, 492 obtained Third Class, while 19 earned Pass degrees.”
He added that 356 graduands would also be awarded various postgraduate degrees, bringing the total number of graduating students to 5,141.
Adeogun announced Bukola Osunrinde, a Computer Science graduate with a perfect CGPA of 5.0, as the overall best graduating student.
He further disclosed that the National Universities Commission had approved 12 new undergraduate programmes and four doctoral programmes for the university.
According to him, the newly approved courses include Entrepreneurship, Physics and Electronics, Cyber Security, Data Science, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, Adult Education, Yoruba, Christian Religious Knowledge, Fisheries and Aquaculture, among others.
Speaking on the impact of NELFUND, the Vice-Chancellor said the Federal Government’s initiative had brought significant relief to students, ensuring that no one was denied access to quality tertiary education due to financial challenges.
“NELFUND is a fantastic idea, and we must continue to thank the Federal Government for such a thoughtful initiative. It has expanded access to tertiary education for Nigerians, irrespective of their economic background.
“For the current 2025/2026 academic session, 4,210 of our students have benefited from the scheme to the tune of N700m.
“We are deeply grateful to President Bola Tinubu for his foresight and strong commitment to expanding access to quality higher education for Nigerian youths,” he said.
Adeogun also said the university’s 20th anniversary lecture, initially scheduled for November last year, would now be delivered on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr Moruf Alausa, alongside the convocation ceremony for first-degree graduates.
He noted that the institution currently enjoys 100 per cent accreditation from the NUC and that its curricula are continuously reviewed to align with global best practices, with emphasis on STEM education, digital pedagogy, entrepreneurship and inclusive education.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the adoption of the institution by the Federal Government had significantly strengthened its standing, positioning it more firmly within the national framework for teacher education and infrastructural development.
Adeogun said the university had also made substantial investments in infrastructure, including the construction of new lecture theatres, laboratories and improved learning facilities, while its ICT capacity had been enhanced to support e-learning, virtual instruction and digital administration.
He further stated that the institution’s alumni continued to make global impact, revealing that one year after Dr. Kayode Adewale, an alumnus of the university, emerged among the Top 50 Teachers in the World, a postgraduate student of the institution, Adeola Olufunke Akinsulure, pursuing a Master’s degree in Educational Technology, had been announced as one of the top 10 finalists.
